Pacific Coast Championships (PCC) Venue Set

Based on fleet feedback and venue availability, PCCs are officially scheduled for July 26 & 27 at the Howard Prairie Reservoir just east of Ashland, Oregon.  The regatta will be organized by the Rogue Yacht Club.  Howard Prairie is a beautiful mountain lake at an elevation of 4500 feet. The Howard Prairie Resort offers a marina, store facilities, nice restrooms and showers.  A group of campsites will be reserved for Thistles with dinner available Saturday night.  More info will be coming in February but you can get a preview at www.rogueyachtclub.org and www.howardprairieresort.com.

Thistle 3955 in the Seattle Boat Show

Dave Casey and Sarah Sheppard have generously allowed their boat to be displayed in the One Design Exhibit at the Seattle Boat Show. This will be a great opportunity to promote the fleet and Thistle racing.  If you are interested in helping staff the booth, just visit the Boat Show on the CYC websitesite (www.cycseattle.org) and pick a shift with no Thistle Fleet coverage.  Shifts are 4 hours in length and you get a free pass for the rest of the day at the boat show.

Leschi Sailboat Moorage -- Volunteer Work Parties

All,
During our work party today, we accomplished a number of additional repairs
to both the north and south floats.  I wasn't working on the South end, so
I'm not sure exactly what happened there, but on the north side of things
the focus was to replace and fix areas where the docks rub on the pilings.
All of the work concentrated on the middle group of floats and at least
three key piling to dock interface points were fixed.  I've attached Dave
Casey's email with pictures for those who are interested.

Chris Schober (the concessionaire) worked with the group all day and has
been extremely supportive, providing materials, tools, and his personal
labor as well.  Overall these events appear to be win/win!  Most of the
useable floats should now last another season, although there is still a lot
of work to be done if they need to last much longer than that.

Speaking of the future, Chris mentioned today, that he had a good meeting
with the parks department last week, and they want to meet with our group
(and the public) sometime during the early part of December to review their
initial plans/proposals.  According to Chris, they are investigating our
suggestion of adding floats to the breakwaters to make the space utilization
more efficient while also increasing the effectiveness of the breakwaters as
a whole.   We'll have to see exactly what this is during the meeting.
Please pass on any information you learn regarding this meeting.  The venue
is supposed to be the Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center.

Change and Improve #1 of 2007 -- May 1st

Wednesday, April 18, 2007 - 08:12 PM
Help support the growth of our fleet!

Please take advantage of our first "Change and Improve" night of the 2007 series on Tuesday May 1st. These first started back in 2003. Initial feedback after the first event was: "The idea is to change crews with other thistlers so as to cross pollinate the fleet with knowledge and skill. Tuesday night (August 5th, 2003) was the first C & I fleet event. About half of the fleet participated. Everyone had a good experience and I think we all basically agreed that we should continue the C & I Tuesdays but that a more structured format be arranged."

In order to provide more "structure" I have volunteered to organize a list of which skippers and crews who want to participate. Please email me with the following information and I will create a roster for which boats people should sail in for the night.

Skipper
1.) Name
2.) Sail Number
3.) Are you willing to participate?
4.) What crew positions (middle, bow, or both) you will have available for the night
5.) New skill(s) you want to learn

Crew
1.) Name
2.) Boat You normally sail on
3.) Position you normally sail (middle or bow)
4.) Desired position to sail in
5.) Skill(s) you want to learn

I hope everyone will participate. Please spread the word.

Change & Improve #1

Monday, April 30, 2007 - 10:32 PM
OK. I think we've go most everything ready for tomorrow night. I've emailed everyone who has signed up with the rotations. There are still a few holes that we can work out on the dock tomorrow. I've also let Kevin know that we don't want the races tomorrow to count toward the series score. If you weren't sure about participating before and you now want to, just let someone know on the dock before you leave and we'll try to work out some impromptu rotations.
See you tomorrow.

Thistle Fleet 61 Volunteers Needed

Monday, May 07, 2007 - 08:39 PM
Thistle Fleet 61 Volunteers Needed

The following tasks are in need of fleet members to coordinate and execute:
1. Fleet Growth & Promotion: To coordinate C&I nights, fleet publications and new member promotion.
2. Social Planner: to organize Pizza night (Scheduled for Tuesday June 19th), Nachos Fiesta, fleet meetings and fleet training.
3. Regatta/Race Chair: To coordinate the Seattle Fleet Traveling Regatta (Summer Solstice CYC event June 9 & 10) and to provide the District with Volunteers at Districts, P.C.C.'s and Nationals and to meet with CYC's Lake Fleet Counsel.
4. Fleet Website and List Serve Team: To take the reins of the existing online communication and web site and keep the flow of information relevant and inspired. Facilitated by John Locke (owner of fleet 61 website and server and author of Open Source Solutions for Small Business Problems).

Over the past years these tasks have been shouldered by a group of Fleet members; of late, it has become the singular roll of the Fleet Captain. This has not been effective as it over burdens the Fleet Captain and does disservice to our fleet. If you have just a bit of time and passion for Thistle Fleet #61, you can help make our fleet stronger.

We will be hosting a Fleet Volunteer Organizational Meeting
Who: Dan & Pattie's Heyl
Location: 2135 N. 148th St, Shoreline WA 98133
When: Friday evening May 11th
What time: Starting at 1900hrs
What's to eat? Pizza (Vegan Pizza available too), Beer, Softdrinks, Water, Tea
What you can bring: anything to add to the menu and allergy pills if you are allergic to cats or dogs.

Please join us! Please RSVP us if you could so we can plan ahead on the pizza order and beer purchase.

If you can't make it and are interested in being a volunteer, please email or call us and let us know what your volunteer interest is and we'll get together and discuss it. We will be getting pizza delivered and serve beer, water, sodas. You can bring dessert if you wish or other extras. Please RSVP so that we know how many folks will be here.

Thistlers!!!

Please attend this meeting if you can! It is very important for the fleets at Leschi!

Kelly Goold of the Seattle Park Service and project manager for the marina renovation has agreed to come and address members and answer questions on Thursday June 21st at 6.30 pm. This could be a very important meeting with regard to the future of the marina and indeed the survival of CYC Lake sailing at Leschi. Please circulate your fleets. Kelly reckons that he will speak for about twenty minutes and then answer questions.
