Race Strategy for Winning on Lake Washington 2008 Edition

Come hear Paul Bogataj, Dale Dunning and Doug Stumberger discuss their methods for winning on Lake Washington:

Paul Bogetaj started sailing a Coronado 15 on Lake Washington in 1987.  He won the El Toro North American Championship in 1986, He won the Coronado-15 North American Championship in 1996 in a borrowed boat, after finished 2nd in the North Americans in the late 80’s. He owned and raced a J-24 from 1989 through 1997.  He won J/24 Season, Fleet, and District Championships.

Paul’s approach to sailing success on Lake Washington is a little more simplified than the past discussions.  He perceives it as very short course racing that is highly dependent on the start and boat speed.  The number of shifts and tacks is minimal and these other factors make more difference on the final finishing position.  He thinks this will be a useful angle for some sailors to appreciate.

Doug Stumberger started sailing on Lake Washington in 1996. After two years racing a J/24 he bought a Thistle and has raced in Fleet #61 ever since. He currently crews for Dwaine and Deanne Trummert on #3669.  Doug keeps a log and is very good at setting goals and measuring progress.  He just returned from Thistle Mid-Winters West where they took 8th of 38 boats, the second highest Seattle Boat.

Dale Dunning has been sailing on the last for 10 years sailing on Snipes, T-Bird’s and Thistles.  He finished 5th at T-Bird Internationals last year and is a top boat in the T-Bird fleet on the lake.  He owns two T-Birds, one Snipe and one-half Thistle.
